Teacher's characteristics
Teacher plays an important role in education. He/ she not only teaches the prescribed syllabus but also shapes his/ her personality through his words and actions, beliefs and attitudes, behaviour and characters and role model. Teachers are undoubtedly a spiritual parent to their pupils as they help their students in recognising their self-potential, in directing their behaviour to the goal achievement, help in building their social behaviour according to the moral values of the society. That's why the educational psychologist have been concerned particularly with the study of teacher's characteristics.
Personality of a teacher
As a personality is total sum of an individual's external and internal qualities, the personalty of a teacher may be explained in terms of his physical and psychological characteristics known as unique traits of his personality expressed in his individualistic behaviour patterns of thinking , feelings and acting reacting.
Physical traits in personality
Researchers show that dominative or cooperative teachers produce dominative or cooperative behaviour and attitude in their pupils. A teacher who has not solved his own conflicts and frustrations in given area cannot be of much help and may even be harmful to pupils having conflicts in the same area.
A teacher should have
- Sound interpersonal relationships.
- Insight into solutions of one's personal problems, and anxieties
- Ability to make a source of actions as well as being able yo employ rational thoughts processes and emotionally mature means.
- Should have sense of humour about one's work and ones's self
- Should have recognition of one's own assists and disabilities.
- Should have the capability of sharing the interests of others.
