What is depression and what are there symptoms


Now a days depression is  common among people whether she is a wife, a husband, a working men or a working women, adult or even a child, everyone experiencing depression on daily bases.
It is normal to be sad, unhappy and moody, sometimes you just want yourself some room but the question is that when these normal feelings convert in to serious illness? 
Yes, depression is a serious illness, it is a disorder that should be treated. Depression which is also known as ( major depressive disorder ) is a serious illness that damages your mental health along with physical health. Depression can destroy your social relationships, your marital life, negatively effect your occupational activities and then these factors work together to bring you at a point where you just want to be dead, your thoughts become suicidal.


Depression is more then sadness you cannot get rid of it at ease, its stuck in your mind, it is always worst then it seems.some people with major depressive disorder start taking drugs and engage in other substance abuse.

People think depression is sadness, being feeling of overwhelmed with emotions. People think that depression is crying but people are wrong. Depression is far away then that, it is the constant feeling of being numb, being numb to emotions, being numb to life, and a feeling to get rid from self, the feeling of hatred for self.

Common symptoms of depression.

  • easily irritable
  • always think negative
  • loss of interest 
  • sleep deprivation or sleeping too much
  • lack of energy
  • inability to anticipate happiness or pleasure
  • feeling of sadness
  • low self steem
  • difficulty in making desicions
  • poor appetite
  • geting introvert
  • taking interest in non food substance
  • excessive nail biting
  • excessive guilty feelings
  • less interest in studies



Major Depressive Disorder 

Diagnostic criteria;
  • Depressed mood most of the day, nearly every day, as indicated by either subjective report ( e.g. feels sad, empty, hopeless ) or observation made by others ( e.g. appears tearful )
Note : In children and adolescents can be irritable mood.
  • Markedly diminished interest of pleasure in all, or almost all, activities most of the day, nearly everyday ( as indicated by either subjective account or observation ) 
  • Significant weight loss when not dieting or weight gain ( e.g. a change of more then 5% of body weight in a month ), or decrease of increase in appetite nearly everyday.
Note : In children, consider failure to make expected weight gain.
  • Insomnia or Hypersomnia nearly everyday.
  • Psychomotor agitation or retardation nearly everyday ( observable by others, not merely subjective feelings of restlessness or being slow down ).
  • Fatigue or loss of energy nearly everyday.
  • Feeling of worthlessness or excessive or inappropriate guilt ( which may be delusion ) nearly everyday ( not merely self reproach and guilty of being sick ).
  • Diminished ability to think or concentrate, or indecisiveness, nearly everyday.
  • Recurrent thoughts of death ( not just fear of dying ), recurrent suicidal ideation without a specific plan, or a suicidal attempt or a specific plan for committing suicide.
Note : The following symptoms have been present during the same 2 weeks period and represent a change from previous functioning.

At least one of the following symptoms must be present either depressive mood or loss of interest.

Note : Symptoms are not included that are clearly attributed to another medical condition.

These symptoms cause significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning.
