There are many approaches to understanding the neurological factors involved in depression.
Genetic factors
- Risk of depression increase for 1st degree relatives.
- Depressive parents children have more chances to develop depression.
Neutotransmitters
Three types of neurotransmitters involve in depression.
- Neropinephrine, high level of norepinephrine involve in depression
- Dopamine, low level of dopamine involve in depression.
- Serotonin, low level of serotonin is also involve in depression.
It is possible that are other medical conditions that are causing depression.
Social Factors in Depression.
Data indicate that neurological factors influence whether or not a person develops depression. Does the mean that social and psychological factors are useless? Not in the least.

Stressful life event
The role of stressful life events in triggering episodes of depression is well stablished. A great deal of research has focused on cause-effect relationship: do life events cause depression, or does depression cause life events ? Prospective studies have been particularly important because they have shown that life events typically happen before the depressive episode begins.
Low social support
People who are depressed tend to have spare social networks and to regard those networks as providing little support. Low social support may lessen a person's ability to handle stressful events.
Interpersonal problems
There is also some evidence that interpersonal problems within family are particularly likely to trigger depression.
For example : Roommates of college students with depression rated social contacts with them as less enjoyable, and they reported feeling hostility towards them.
Low social competence
Low social competence predicted the onset of depression among elementary school children and poor interpersonal problem-solving predicted increase in depression among adolescents.
Psychological factors in depression.
Many different psychological factors may play an important role in depression.
Cognitive theories.
In cognitive theories, Negative thoughts and beliefs are seen as a major cause of depression.
Beck's theory
Argued that depression is associated with Negative Triad : Negative views of the self, the world and the future. The " world " part of the triad refers to the person's own corner of the world - the situation he or she faces.
For example : people might think " I cannot possibly cope with all these demands and responsibilities"
According to this model, in childhood, people with depression acquired negative schema through experiences such as loss of parent, the social rejection of peers, or the depressive attitude of parents. The negative schema is activated whenever the person encounters situations similar to those that originally caused the schema to form.
Hopelessness theory
According to hopelessness theory, the most important trigger of depression is hopelessness. Which defined as an expectation that
- Desirable outcomes will not occur
- The person has no responses available to change this situation.
Rumination theory
This theory suggested that a specific way of thinking called rumination may may increase the risk of depression. Rumination is defined as a tendency to repetitively dwell on sad experiences and thoughts, or to chew on material again and again.
Women tend to ruminate more than men do, perhaps because of sociocultural norms about emotions and emotions expression. The tendency for women to ruminate more may help explain the higher rates of depression among women as compared to men.
